What to look for in Sunglasses

Summertime brings long days with lots of sun so many people wear sunglasses more during the summer months.

Here are some important things to look for when purchasing sunglasses.

1- Purchase sunglasses with 100% UV protection: UV damage from the Sun can cause problems inside the eye such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Small growths (age spots) on the front of the eye are also associated with increased UV exposure. Wearing sunglasses with 100% UV protection helps keeps the eyes healthy both inside and out.

2- Anti reflective coating is important: Sunglasses help block out the sun, but it is also important to have anti reflective coating to cut down on the glare. It is also very important to have anti reflective coating on the BACKSIDE of the lens as UV rays that come in from the side of the sunglasses can reflect back into the eye. A backside anti-reflective coating will help eliminate this from happening.

3- Polarized Lenses are a great option: Polarized lenses help block out glare and reflections coming off surfaces like water and pavement. Polarized lenses do not offer more protection but they do help provide better vision and make it easier to see on bright sunny days. I always recommend polarized lenses as it makes the sunglasses work that much better!
